1up Blog #80: 2011: A Year of Disappointment (07/26/2011)

In my opinion, 2011 has been a pretty poor year so far. Yes, when you consider the Tactics Ogre remake for PSP is the only game I bought that might make sense, but that’s because there has been hardly anything to interest me this year. Crysis 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, LA Noire, Killzone 3 (which I played) and Dead Space 2 may very well be great games, but I doubt I’ll be buying those even at budget price. Portal 2 is the only other game I’ve considered picking up, and I only hesitated buying that one because I thought the original was overrated. Even Tactics Ogre, (while initially excellent) soured on me when I realized Final Fantasy Tactics was ultimately far superior.
The good thing however is that 2011 seems overloaded with great games in its second half. After playing the Catherine demo, I’m officially sold on the game. I knew months ago the game had an interesting story and presentation, but I didn’t think the game would grab me as it did in the demo.
And here are the rest of the games I’m getting for sure:

Deus Ex: Human Revolution
The art direction is to die for.

Gears of War 3
Horde mode will be worth the price alone.

Team ICO Collection
Last year, I was trying to track down a copy of ICO for under $40 to no avail. Now I can get that with Shadow for exactly $40!

Uncharted 3
While it is up in the air for me whether the multiplayer is a flop or a Gears killer, I know the campaign will be amazing.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
Pretty much a no-brainer if you don’t own any of the three games (missing for me is Peace Walker).

Halo: CE Anniversary
It actually seems kind of sad that over half the games I’m getting this year are rereleases, but then I look at the games: Metal Gear Solid 3, Shadow of the Colossus, and Halo: CE. These games are all arguably in my top ten games ever. I’ll enjoy playing these games in 2021 I’m sure. Better graphics certainly help a lot too.
