1up Blog #88: My 2011 Game of the Year - A Four-Way Tie (01/11/2011)

“Misery won’t get the best of me. Cause now I’m calling on your bluff.” – Billy Talent
Rough year, eh? But I’m here to talk about games. So let’s go!
Best Gameplay - Gears of War 3
I will be the first to admit Gears of War 3 did not add a whole bunch to the fantastic foundation of the original game. Of course, it didn’t have to: it's that good. Gears of War 3 instead focuses on offering the same great gunplay, more intense scenery, and even louder, more bombastic music. And I couldn’t ask for more.
Runner up - Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Best Visuals - Uncharted 3
It’s hard to argue with Uncharted 3 having best graphics of 2011. Its trailer being frequently played in the movies it should come as no surprise why. And I see heads rise more often than any other trailer in the theatre.
Runner up - Gears of War 3
Best Rerelease - Halo: CE Anniversary
2011 almost looks like the year of rereleases. Sure, most of these may have simply been HD releases rather than full-blown remakes, but it’s a good reason to revisit or even start yesterday’s classics. Halo Anniversary is the best effort of all the releases. Yes, Tactics Ogre did something similar and possibly modernized the gameplay better, but just look at the original version! Though I have a nostalgic love for the look, it’s hard to deny the original game has aged poorly. Bungie clearly took a number of shortcuts when designing its levels which look decidedly boring and bare today. All the visual detail added in this remake takes away that feeling and leaves the original game’s brilliant design in-tact. Other than the lack of sprint and a limited weapon arsenal, an uninformed person could almost be fooled that this is a new game.
Runner Up - Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
Best Soundtrack – Uncharted 3
Coming from the composer of Firefly, it is no surprise Uncharted 3 brings out another excellent score (so good that I even bought the soundtrack… which is the first time I’ve done that since 2004). Uncharted 3’s music is not only amazing to listen to, it is also implemented in the game better than I have seen in any game before. There’s nothing like reaching the final moments of an epic chase scene than have the music ramp up intensity just as you reach the final moments. A lot people might not think music is one of the most important parts of the experience, but with Uncharted 3 it is.
Runner up - Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Bonuses of 2011
Best Movie - Rise of the Planet of the Apes
